Husband and father, John R. Kernodle, Jr., was born in Burlington, NC. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University and graduated with honors from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Boston.

John was an active member of the community. He served others in capacities such as President of the Crescent Rotary Clubs, PTS President of Peeler Elementary, President of Fisher Park Neighborhood Association, President of the Young Lawyers Section, Board Chairman of the Eastern Music Festival, and chairperson of the Guilford County Board of Education.

His interest in education ran deep. He lectured at Guilford College, was an Adjunct Faculty member of Wake Forest School of Law, and an assistant to the Dean in Educational Administration, Higher Education, and Educational Research at UNC-G.

John also brought a whole-hearted enthusiasm to those things which brought him joy--his family, Duke basketball, music, his church and a large circle of friends. His wide smile and welcoming personality made him a favorite companion. The gentleness and kindness that so distinguished his public life made him a treasured friend.

John's legacy of his life and work remains with us at Kernodle Middle School. We, at Kernodle, will remember and strive to uphold the standards of John R. Kernodle, Jr.
